John Gaedeke

Survival trainer, river guide and dog musher

John loves nature, solitude and animals. He inherited Iniakuk Lodge in the Brooks Range from his father, who used to take tourists on big-game hunts here. But John, who isn't much into hunting, now runs it as an ecotourism lodge.

The lodge sits in a beautiful spot on Iniakuk Lake, far from any civilization, and has two more log cabins in nearby Gates of the Arctic National Park.

Where they work

The country around Iniakuk Lodge is breathtaking, and John knows it like the back of his hand. Going bear watching with him is a blast, because he not only knows where to find them, he also has the know-how to handle the animals. So with him around, you always feel very safe, and you also get the sense that you're not disturbing the animals. John loves nature, and that's why he knows how to respect it.
The great thing is that with John, anything is possible. He can lead extremely strenuous survival trips, and at the same time he's an incredibly attentive host when you just want to unwind at the lodge. The lodge has a log cabin on a small peninsula, away from the other cabins. Sometimes caribou even swim across the lake just 20 meters (65 feet) from the deck. And in winter, there's no better spot for watching the northern lights than the bar in this cabin.
In summer, John offers river and fishing trips, hikes or simply relaxing in the wilderness at his comfortable lodge. In winter, you can join him on dog sledding and/or northern lights expeditions.
Just get in touch with him or with us, and your custom program is all set!
