500 Kilometers from Civilization: Help Build a Log Cabin (10 days)
The floatplane touches down gently on Iniakuk Lake and taxis to the dock of the Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge on the edge of Gates of the Arctic National Park. 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of the Arctic Circle and around 500 kilometers (310 miles) from the nearest settlement, you'll experience and enjoy pure nature with all your senses. Along the way, your guide John can teach you how to build a log cabin the traditional way, in harmony with nature. You decide how much you want to pitch in or kick back. But be warned: the bears in this area may be strong, but most of the time they're not keen on hauling logs for you.
Description
On this ten-day trip, you can enjoy the beauty of nature from every angle and learn a great deal from it and with it. John Gaedeke wants to build another log cabin, and you can help him and see how a log cabin is built in the traditional way almost entirely from materials found in the surrounding nature – just like the trappers and settlers of old. How hard you want to work is up to you. You'll be amazed at the tricks that let even the heaviest logs be moved and stacked with relative ease – putting the laws of physics to work with the simplest means. Because the log cabin is located in Gates of the Arctic National Park, almost only local building materials may be used. Heavy machinery isn't allowed; the biggest machine is a chainsaw. Beyond that, the cabin has to be built with what nature provides and human muscle. And you can be sure that brings a lot of fun and experience.
It won't be unusual for wild animals to watch you at work. Of course, you can turn the tables at any time and take a short or long break to watch the caribou at their work – mostly eating. A day off can always be built in, too, and is perfect for exploring on foot or by kayak.
Naturally, this trip can be combined with many other options. Just take a look at the other offers from murkl.com or John Gaedeke. Every trip with him is planned individually, so the exact program of your days at Iniakuk is put together by arrangement, entirely according to your wishes. For this purpose, please get in touch with John Gaedeke or with us personally before booking.
