Tom´s Premium Selection presents: A Group Trip Through Southern Alaska

For this group trip idea through Southern Alaska, we at murkl.com are teaming up with Tom´s Premium Selection. The motto of the trip: trying out the unknown together. With no more than ten people through the south of Alaska.

The trip starts in Alaska's only big city, Anchorage. You ride the Alaska Railroad along Turnagain Arm high up into the world of glaciers, a journey with spectacular views of Alaska's wilderness. Along the way you stop in Girdwood, named the most beautiful ski resort in the world by National Geographic, then at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage and at the glacial lake by Spencer Glacier.

From Anchorage you continue along the Iditarod Trail, home to one of the most famous sled dog races in the world, all the way to Winterlake Lodge at the edge of the Alaska Range. Whitewater expeditions, fishing, rafting, hikes, flightseeing tours and much more await you over the next few days. You are completely free to decide on the spot what you want to do next. Our guides are there for you.

Then a floatplane picks you up and takes you across the Alaska Range to the coast. Your destination is the dock of Tutka Bay Lodge. Here you can go on adventures by helicopter and on a deep-sea fishing boat. And adventure is guaranteed on every single day of this trip!

Description

Travel dates: June 24 to July 5, 2018

Day 1: Welcome to Anchorage

A shuttle takes you from the airport straight to your first accommodation, the Hotel Captain Cook. Your first night in Alaska couldn't get any better: the rooftop bar is probably the best in town. And the view already shows you the vastness that awaits you in Alaska: Alaska's biggest city, the ocean, the glaciers.

Day 2: Into the world of glaciers on the Alaska Railroad

Stunning scenery, seen from the Alaska Railroad. The train winds its way along Turnagain Arm into the world of glaciers. Girdwood is well worth a short stop: in 2016, National Geographic named it the most beautiful ski resort in the world. The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage is also worth a stop, because here you can watch wolves, bears, moose and reindeer.

Next up is Turnagain Pass, and the track climbs steeply. The next destination: the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop, which can only be reached by the Alaska Railroad. From here, a small trail leads you about two kilometers (just over a mile) to the glacial lake of Spencer Glacier. A spectacular view is guaranteed.

And still the highlights keep coming: on the next stretch of the train ride, the tracks reach the tree line. Along the Placer River you get a majestic view of Bartlett Glacier and Trail Glacier.

Day 3 – 5: By floatplane to Winterlake Lodge

From land into the air: from the world's largest floatplane lake in Anchorage, you take off toward Winterlake Lodge. During the Iditarod, probably the toughest sled dog race in the world at 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles), the lodge is a checkpoint for the mushers and their handlers. At the same time, Winterlake Lodge is one of the most beautiful lodges in the Alaska Range. And for the next few days, it's your home. What you make of your time here is entirely up to you.

Fly fishing, pike fishing by kayak or boat, rafting, hiking in the tundra, walks with a view of Denali – our guides are there for you and make every adventure possible! And if you want to go flightseeing or are tempted by really remote fishing spots, a helicopter is at your disposal!

Day 6 – 11: On by floatplane to Tutka Bay Lodge

Once again, the floatplane makes for a magnificent onward journey over the panorama of Alaska's coast. You land at the dock of Tutka Bay Lodge. And once again a completely different landscape awaits you. You can explore it by helicopter and on a deep-sea fishing boat, however you like. Hike along Grace Ridge through the coastal tundra and the northernmost rainforest in the world. Watch Alaska's bears and salmon on excursions.

And in the evening, you can look back on the day and its unforgettable experiences in the sauna right on the water and in the hot tub on the deck, with a good glass of wine. Whatever you have planned, our guides are of course at your side here too, at any time.

Day 12: Back to Homer and on to Anchorage

After your time at Tutka Bay Lodge, a water taxi picks you up and takes you to Homer. Here you switch to a small private plane that flies you to Anchorage. In Anchorage, one last unforgettable evening with a delicious farewell dinner awaits you.

So much experienced, so much nature, so much Alaska – an unforgettable vacation.
